The Bash is not a race or a rally and speed is not important. What really matters is that everyone has an enjoyable time travelling in parts of Australia they would not otherwise see, at the same time raising money for special needs children.
The Bash was originated by businessman, explorer and philanthropist Dick Smith in June 1985 when he organised a group of people to travel from Sydney to Bourke in Far West New South Wales, and from there to Burketown in Northern Queensland.
Dick wanted to take a few mates for a drive in the outback in old cars and at the same time raise money for charity. He charged everyone to enter, and entrants were able to bribe the officials or be fined.
That first event raised $250,000 for Variety and was known as the Bourke to Burketown Bash.
The annual Variety Bash is Australia's most successful charity motoring event. It is the focal point of fund raising efforts by many hundreds of supporters of Variety, with the money raised helping ill, special needs and disadvantaged children.
What is a Bash Car?
You will need a reliable, well-built vehicle, which will survive the trip and be noticed so that your sponsors receive some benefit.
The transmission, engine and engine ancillaries must be as originally specified for the vehicle. Fuel is always available, but it is advised to carry a jerry can as sometimes it is a long way between stops.
Modifications to the body shape are permitted where such modifications are designed to enhance the appearance of the vehicle for sponsorship purposes or for fun! Modifications to the brakes, suspension & fuel tanks are allowed for safety but no improvements for extra speed or performance modifications.
Attention-grabbing and unusual decorations make for a great Bash car … the stranger the better.

Raising funds for Variety The Childrens Charity
About Variety
Variety, The Children's Charity is dedicated to transforming the lives of children with special needs.
Variety provides grants to individuals and organisations for a great number of items such as special wheelchairs, vocal output speech devices, prosthetic limbs, special play equipment and liberty swings.
We give grants to hospitals, we provide Sunshine Coaches to special schools and organisations so that kids can get out and about in the sunshine and experience life and we also provide children special experiences such as parties and adventure camps to give them opportunities that able bodied kids may take for granted.
Variety raises funds from a number of sources, from corporate partnership, to events, to donations - and to date we have delivered over $124 million net to help Australia’s sick, disadvantaged and disabled children.
Variety employs 42 full time staff around the country who are supported by over 2,500 volunteers and committees running various events, functions, outings with children, investigation of appeals applications and more. Variety keeps administration costs at below 10 per cent and our gross to net margin continues to lead every other major children’s charity in the country.
The Variety Club was founded in Australia in 1975 with Paul Hogan as the first Chief Barker (Chairman) and is now represented now in all states and territories of Australia, helping tens of thousands of children every year.
Although our work is serious, Variety never forgets the importance of having fun. Our supporters, our sponsors, our volunteers and of course the special children that we help, would all testify that Variety succeeds in the mission to bringing smiles to faces of a great number of special kids and those that are helping them.
